Pear Tree Pruning + Zinnias, Strawflower, Coleus and Herbs sown…

It’s the first of June, but it’s seems like it’s winter or early spring. In fact, it was raining for a bit this morning, but luckily it stopped by the afternoon.

Dead Pear Branches

I did major pruning on our four pear trees. I noticed that there were a lot of dead branches, so I pruned anything that was dead. I didn’t get everything, and I may leave one of the tall branches in the middle Bosc Pear since I noticed that that where our neighborhood hummingbird loves to perch and sing. I still have more to prune, but it was getting late and I was getting tired.

Dwarf Border Sunflower Potted Up

Before going in, I planted the 5 Dwarf Border Sunflower plants into a 5 gallon container. I’ll move this to the front later this week.

Zinnias and Strawflower Sown

I also sowed Zinnia ‘Whirligig’ Folia, Zinnia (Fall 2005) Folia and Tall Double Strawflowers Folia.

Inside, I sowed 8 kinds of Coleus from seeds I saved:
Coleus (Unknown Burgundy G2-2006/2011) Folia
Coleus (Dapple Apple G2-2006/2011) Folia
Coleus (Sedona G2-2006/2011) Folia
Coleus (Amora G2-2005/2011) Folia
Coleus (Kong Green G2-2005/2011) Folia
Coleus (Kong Salmon Pink G2-2010/2011) Folia
Coleus (Dark Star G2-2005/2011) Folia
Coleus (Splash G2-2006/2011) Folia

Coleus and Herbs Sown

I also sowed some herbs:
Basil ‘Hybrid Thai Lemon’ Folia
Basil ‘Lettuce Leaf’ Folia
Basil (Sweet, Chia brand) Folia
Perilla frustescens (Shi-so) ‘Vietnamese, Tia To’ Folia

‘Kong Green’ Babies…

Last year I had two Kong Coleus. (Coleus ‘Kong Scarlet’ and Coleus ‘Kong Green’)

The ‘Kong Green’ cutting that I wanted to overwinter didn’t survive, so I planted some seeds that I harvested, hoping that I would get more ‘Kong Green’ plants. Instead I got four different looking children.

Coleus 'Kong Green 4 (Hybrid)'   Coleus 'Kong Green 3 (Hybrid)'

Coleus 'Kong Green 2 (Hybrid)'   Coleus 'Kong Green 1 (Hybrid)'

Here’s the mama plant from last year (2005).

Coleus 'Kong Green'

Coleus Up + More Seeds Down…

I just checked my Jiffy Mini-Greenhouse planted with Coleus and to my surprise, three of them have started to come up, just after four days. They are ‘Kong Green’, ‘Kong Scarlet’ and ‘Tabasco?’.

I also sow more seeds into the Jiffy Greenhouse (72 Pellets):

– Sugar Snap Peas (12 pellets)
– Japanese Long Purple Eggplant (6 pellets)
– Roma Tomato (3 pellets)
– Clemson Spineless Okra (3 pellets)
– Bok Choy (12 pellets)
– Hybrid Summer Boy Chin-Chiang Cabbage (6 pellets)
– Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard (6 pellets)
– Salad Bowl Lettuce (8 pellets)
– Grand Rapids Lettuce (8 pellets)
– Mighty Red Oak Lettuce (8 pellets)

Anxious…

I thought I’m really tired and it’s really late and I have to get up early for a funeral tomorrow… I’m anxious to sowed another batch of seeds. Seeing how quickly my first Coleus emerged, I’m sowing another 12 pack Jiffy Mini-Greenhouse with 6 types of Coleus (2 Jiffy pellets each):

– Coleus ‘Kong Green’ (I couldn’t tell if these seeds were good)
– Coleus ‘Dark Star’
– Coleus ‘Amora?’
– Some type of red coleus (Coleus ‘Tabasco’ maybe?)
– Coleus ‘Tilt-A-Whirl’
– Coleus ‘Kong Scarlet’

5 Day Weekend…

Friday, July 1

Today was the start of my 5 day holiday weekend. I had a lot of errands to do so I was only able to do a little bit of maintenance gardening and everything is looking good.

My mom and I went to Mid City Nursery in American Canyon. Even though this nursery is less than 10 minutes away from my house, I’ve never been to it because it closes before I get home from work.

I was very impressed. They had a lot of plants that I normally don’t see in larger garden centers, including some Fuchsias, Coleus and Euphorbias that I liked. I ended up buying 4 plants (I’ll post photos later)

Euphorbia Mozambique
Fuchsia hybrid “Golden Marinka”
Fushsia triphylla “Firecracker”
Coleus “Velvet Lime”

Saturday-Monday, July 2-4

My friend Darwin and I are going to Reno to take a mini vacation and visit my friend Michael. Michael introduced me to Coleus last year and actually gave me my first cutting (unfortunately it didn’t survive). Michael is starting his “Garden Design and Installation” business and I was looking forward to seeing him and his work… So I packed some Coleus I rooted and brought it along with the business cards that I designed for him.

We visited several nurseries and I did buy some plants (I’ll post photos later):

Coleus “Pat Martin”
Coleus “Jade”
Coleus “New Orleans Red”
Coleus “Stained Glassworks Burgundy Wedding Train”
Coleus “Gay’s Delight”
Perilla “Magilla”

Michael also gave me a cute little hypertufa pot that he made planted with a succulent.

Tuesday, July 3

Since this was my last day of the long weekend I wanted to visit the Berkeley Horticultural Nursery again… just to see if they had any new Coleus…. and they did… so I ended up buying five more… I just couldn’t resist.

Coleus “Wild Lime”
Coleus “Wild Lime” (I think this one is mislabeled because it’s different than the previous “Wild Lime”)
Coleus “Exhinition Magma”
Coleus “Rustic Orange”
Coleus “Trailing Rose Frost”

I also noticed another nursery on the way home. So I checked it out and OMG they had a Coleus sale. Buy 3 get one free… So I got four more along with a Euphorbia species. The Coleus were old and already flowering, but I’ll just take cuttings of them and make new plants.

Coleus “Dragon Black”
Coleus “Tabasco”
Coleus “Sunshine Burgundy Sun”
Coleus “Kong Green”

With all these new plants, I stopped by a local store and got a couple of cheap 18 inch pots. I also got Mondo Grass Ophiopogon and “found” some detached baby succulents.

Once home, I did major potting. All in all, I potted 5 succulents, a hanging Fuchsia pot and 3 large pots with Coleus.

I’m sleepy, so that’s it for now… I’ll post some pictures soon…
