My New Orchid + Seedpods + Seed

My friend Darwin and I bought this Orchid this weekend for under $20. I spilt it into two and kept half for myself.

My New Unknown Orchid

I’m not sure what cultivar it is. Anyone know?

The Amaryllis seedpod that I’ve been watching has started to pop open, so I collected the seeds, which I will plant as lblanchard did.

Amaryllis Seed Pod

Speaking of seeds… I found this seed in a parking lot near my work. At first I thought it was just a coffee bean, but it had a skin (similar to a peanut skin) that came off. I’m not really sure what it is, but I planted it to see if it grows.

Found Seed

  • Speaking of amaryllis — I’m now up to 26 seedlings.

    • Wow! I think I got only a few viable seeds from our one and only seed pod. Most of them didn’t develop…

      • There’s not much to them. They feel like little bits of paper — you can only feel the seed inside the paper very faintly. The difference between the ones that developed and the ones that didn’t appears to be size.

Did you guys do anything about pollination? I helped mine along with a soft brush — from one flower to another. The one where I tried to pollinate from the same flower didn’t do much at all.

I’ll gladly send you some of my crop once I have actual bulbs, although I fear they will produce some pretty unprepossessing blooms.

  • It looks like a Miltassia of some sort. I’ve seen the coloring before, but can’t remember what the name of it was. I have the Shelob Tolkien, which is similar to yours, but darker…yours has more yellow.

The Miltassia is a cross between the miltonia and the brassia and has lasting blooms. This plant is of oncidium intergenerics, so follow the same care instructions as an oncidium.

    • Thanks gypsy_soul, I think I saw ‘Shelob Takien’ in one of my searches, but wasn’t quite sure if they are the same. I found a some that look similar:

      – Miltassia Shelob ‘Red Spider’ ( link ) ( link 2 )
      – Miltassia Olmec ‘Kanno’/’Kano’ ( link ) ( link 2 )

  • Oh, and don’t forget to email me your address so I can send you those seeds :)
