New Theme + Helvetica Neue Light…

A few days ago, I changed my blog theme from the simpleX theme to the Twenty Ten theme. I like Twenty Ten because it’s clean, simple and I noticed it had a photographic header graphic, which can be customized, so I made one added using some of my photos:

I customized the fonts using Georgia Bold Italic for the subheads and Helvetica for the body text. I wanted to use Helvetica Neue Light but not matter what code I changed in the four CSS files, I couldn’t get it to change… Until I read the article Helvetica Neue Light on blog.gesteves.com.

Apparently, I was using the incorrect font name. I was using “Helvetica Neue Light” instead of “HelveticaNeue-Light”… so now it works :)

Cooking Channel on DirecTV?…

I first heard of the Cooking Channel a few weeks ago at a friend’s condo while watching a show on the Food Network (on Comcast cable). The Cooking Channel is a new channel that will premiere on May 31, 2010 and showcases more cooking shows than the Food Network. My friend said that Food Network was moving some of its “cooking” show over to the new channel.

I didn’t know if DirecTV (which we have) will carry it… So I tweeted them, asking if the were going to carry the Cooking Channel. They replied:
“@joelignacio no plans for that at this time, Joel. If that changes, we’ll post it here.”

Today, I just saw another commercial, but this time on DirecTV… so I checked the Cooking Channel’s site and saw this post that mentions:
“If you currently get the Fine Living Channel, it replaces that on May 31st — same channel.”

We currently get the Fine Living Channel, so I now think we will get the Cooking Channel once it premieres. I tweeted DirecTV back asking:
“@DIRECTV Just read that Cooking Channel will replace Fine Living Channel (232) on 5/31. Does this also apply to DirecTV? http://j.mp/aeic3N”

Me and an iPad…

Me and an iPad

I finally got to see an actual iPad for the first time.

Our IT person brought it up from downstairs and shared it with us.

I played with a piano app and played Chariot’s of Fire for my coworkers. I then played around with the Adobe Ideas app and my coworker Ed took a photo of me with the Devil Doll I drew.

I was also able to test if the Apple Component AV Cable works… and it does.

iLuv Vibe Plus Alarm Clock with Bed Shaker (First Impressions)

I first heard about the iLuv Vibe Plus Alarm Clock with Bed Shaker on TUAW’s website (iLuv iPhone dock includes “bed shaker”) and immediately placed an order for it on Amazon (product page) even though it was not released yet.

iLuv Vibe Plus Alarm Clock with Bed Shaker

After waiting about a month, I finally got it in the mail… My first impression: I love my new Alarm Clock!

The first thing I did when I opened it and plugged it in was dock my iPhone on it and it automatically set the time and date on its own. My Mom thought it had it’s own atomic clock.

I really like the Alarm Features:
– There is two separate alarms and each on has its own button to turn it on/off.
Frequency: M-F, Sat+Sun or Everyday
– Using the wheel, you select the hour, then the minute. You can set it forward or backwards.
Wake to Shaker, Buzzer+Shaker, iPod+Shaker, Radio+Shaker, Buzzer, iPod, Radio
– If you pick Radio, you can set the volume level.

You can play the radio/iPod through the Alarm Clock Speakers, through the Shaker or both. The Shaker itself has 3 volume settings (low, medium and high)

I set the alarm 1 to play the radio at a low volume 30 minutes before I want to wake up. I then set the second alarm to shake (not buzzer since it takes a really loud ring to wake me up and it’ll wake my brother up first)

I didn’t actually get to see if the alarms wakes me up the first night because I woke up too early, since I have a lot of work today.

DVD/Blu-ray Player Suggestions?…

A couple days ago, my Mom expressed interest in playing her exercise videos in our living room TV since there is space there to move around (unlike our family room which is crowded). The problem is that her exercise videos are on VHS tape and we don’t have a VCR on that TV anymore.

BTW… I have been recording the TV program Sit and Be Fit for my Mom… Here she is exercising in the crowded family room. She was so adorable!

Exercising

I can reinstall the VCR in the living toom, but I’m thinking of getting a DVD (or Blu-ray) Player that will play DVDs. I also want it to be multifunctional… This is what I’m looking for:

– DVD or Blu-ray Player
– Can play DVD-R with burned H.264 video (.m4v)
– WiFi (built in, I don’t want to buy a separate USB WIFI receiver)
– Can play videos (mpeg1, mpeg2, mp4, m4v) on networked computers
– Can play videos on an attached USB drive
– Netflix Now Playing
– Old style composite video output (yellow)

Any one have any suggestions?

These are some that may qualify. I still need to research further:

Hello World… New Blog (Again)

So I’m giving WordPress another try… but this time my friend Bill installed it to my joelignacio.com site, instead of using the wordpress.com site, which I abandoned some time ago. They were charging to upgrade to customize CSS styles and for no-ads.

MacJournal

I’ve been manually transferring my journal entries from my old blog to this one, but haven’t quite completed the process.

As, I was trying out an app called MacJournal, I discovered a slightly easier way to transfer entries from one blog to another than using a web browser (which was hoe I was doing it). I still have to do each entry manually, but I don’t have to copy/paste/enter entry dates/etc.

Here’s how I did it:

1. First, I created a New Journal for old blog. I’ll name this “Old Journal”… I then connect the old blog to “Old Journal” by selecting Journal > Edit Blog Setting… (Follow the steps to add the blog)

2. I then created another journal for my current blog (the one you’re reading) following the same steps as above.

3. I then downloaded all the blog entries to MacJournal using Journal > Download Entries from Blog… Now I can see all my entries from my old blog.

4. I selected an entry from my old blog, right-click it, then select Share > Send to other blog…

[Update]

So, as I was transferring my entries from my old blog to this one, I noticed that some of the formatting got messed up when the entries were downloaded from the old blog to MacJournal. Also, I can’t figure out how to look at the HTML code directly; I can only see it WYSIWYG… so I was also losing the LJ-cuts… so I think I will stick to manually transferring using a web browser for now… It’ll just take longer, but I’ll just do it in batches…
