Bel Air Coleus
On Sunday, my friend Darwin and I went to his relatives in Roseville, CA for his niece’s birthday party. They ran out of soda, so we drove to a nearby Bel Air market to get some. Right when we get in, I saw some Coleus that they were selling as house plants. The label read “Topical Foliage”… How generic can you get! Darwin graciously bought it for me :)
Peas
I haven’t been gardening lately, but I needed to plant the Peas that I sowed about a week and a half ago, before they start getting all tangled up in their six pack containers… so I started digging up part of the soil in my third veggie bed and amended it with potting mix and manure.
I was planning to build up the walls to this third bed, but haven’t had the chance to, so I temporarily place two layers of scalloped bricks until I can mortar the walls… which won’t be until maybe next spring.
As I was digging up the soil, I found some Garlic that I planted in the Fall of 2004. I thought they all rotted and died because they hardly had any foliage. I recorded this on June 15, 2005. Apparently, they survived.
Since they are small, I think I will replant them.
New Zealand Spinach
I just received an email from NZ Magazine asking for permission to use this photo of my New Zealand Spinach…. I’m excited, I may be published! :)
Unknown Weed in My Veggie Bed
I just noticed the flower on this plant that’s in one of my veggie beds. Before it bloomed, I thought it was a Tomato that grew from our compost. Now I think it grew from a seed carried from birds that frequent our yard, since I see bird droppings with seeds in them on the Cucumber next to this plant.
Anyone know what this is?
My garden is in the Northern-East San Francisco Bay Area (zone 9A).
A Little Bit of Gardening…
I haven’t been able to work on the garden in a while. Today I was able to do a little bit, today… although I still have to fix up my third vegetable bed for the fall vegetables.
I did my monthly Coleus pot moves, moving some of the pots in the front patio back to the back and some pots from the back to be highlighted in the front. That way everyone gets their time in the spotlight…
The Coleus are in bloom now. I’ve been clipping the flowers back, but for some of the varieties that are past their prime, I’m letting them go.
I did notice that one of them is close to dead. I’ve had trouble with Coleus ‘Fishnet Stockings’ since the spring. For some reason the mealy bugs really like it and have been attacking no matter how much i try to spray them out. So I took some cuttings to see if I can start some off to over-winter.
I also sowed four six packs of Sugar Snap Peas and Dwarf Gray Peas (a Snow Pea)… I was gonna sow some lettuce and chard and other greens, but my Mom wanted to go grocery shopping, go I had to go. I’ll plant those tomorrow.

Lost Dog
We found this lost Boxer mix in front of our doorstep. I placed ads in craigslist, check lost pets ads, drove around the neighborhood for lost posters, and took her to the vet to see if she had a microchip. Unfortunately, I did not find the owner…
Fortunately, one of my friends wanted her, so I gave her the dog and now they are both happy :)
