Can Peachcot Scions be Grafted to an Asian Plum?

I got a Peachcot scion from a recent CRFG Scion Exchange and was wondering if it can be grafted onto an Asian Plum. I’ve had success grafting an Apricot scion to our Asian Plums, but I know Peaches can’t be grafted to an Asian Plum1.

Anyone know if Peachcot scions can be grafted to an Asian Plum?

Mystery Alameda Street Tree…

As I was walking down Santa Clara Avenue in Alameda, I saw a few trees growing along the street and wondered what they were.

Each branch has 6, 8 or 10 leaves in pairs on opposite sides of the branch. Some of the tree have a bunch of suckers growing at the base of the tree. The younger stems are reddish brown. I crushed a leaf and there is really no distinct odor.

Here is a photo of the whole tree along the street.

Unknown Apple

Unknown Apple by joeysplanting

We have this Apple growing in our yard, but we lost the plant tag a long time ago. It has a really good taste that is sweet and a little tangy. When you slice it open, there are portions of the flesh that are semi-translucent–like it’s been frozen–but it hasn’t. I haven’t seen this in any other Apples. My Mom says that the fruits are always like this and it reminds her of a Pineapple.

Anyone know what kind of Apple this is?

Apples, Pears and Asian Pears…

Apple and Pear Crisp

I harvest various Apples, Pears and Asian Pears from our garden to make an Apple and Pear Crisp.

Harvested Apples, Pears and Asian Pears

I harvested the two Asian Pear ‘Hosui’ Folia fruits because they were starting to soften. I think I should have harvested them a few weeks ago when they were more firm.

Asian Pear 'Hosui' vs Other Asian Pear

The Asian Pear ‘Hosui’ fruits are more brown and spotted than our existing Asian Pear (unknown variety) Folia that they are grafted onto.

One of our Apple variety has splotches of semi-translucent areas inside the fruit. It looks mushy, but isn’t. My Mom says that this is normal and it tastes a little like Pineapple.

I didn’t remember to take a photo of the unpeeled Apple. I’ll have to check the tree and take a photo.

Anyone happen to know this Apple variety?

Does Superthrive Expire?

I stumbled onto a page on Amazon.com for Superthrive, the plant vitamin and hormone supplement… and remembered that I have a small bottle (from maybe 3 years ago) somewhere that I hardly used.

Does anyone know if Superthrive expire?… and do you think it’ll be worth it to dig it up and use it again?

Sewing Machine Recommendations?

My New Michley LSS-505 Sewing Machine

After sewing on my cheap small Michley sewing machine (see above) for a while, I’m considering getting a simple, but less toy-like machine. My Michley LSS-505 a pretty decent sewing machine for the price ($35); it gets basic stuff done, it’s super easy to carry around (only about 5 lbs.) and can run on batteries (no need to plug it in)… but I think I want a faster machine that can handle thicker fabrics (or more layer like in a quilt) and be able to attach a 1/4 inch or walking foot.

Any suggestions or recommendations? What sewing machine do you use?

Habitat Arrows Quilt Vote + Fabric Shopping…

I created a rough draft and two alternate versions for my next quilt. Which do you like best: A, B or C?

Habitat Arrows Quilt Vote

Earlier today, I went to our local fabric shop to try to find fabrics to match the Habitat line that I got last night. I’m surprised the the employees there remember me and asked how my quilts are coming along :)
