Mark, I met you briefly at the Sebastopol Scion Exchange last year. I had hoped at that time to get a seedling of your Albert's Pride feijoa but you were surrounded by other anxious "feijoa people" and when I came back later, you were gone! I am desperate to get a pineapple guava growing (I have very fond memories of 2 bushes that I used to raid in Marin Co.). When I moved into my current home in San Geronimo (West Marin Co.) I immediately planted what was tagged as a pineapple guava. That was 12 yrs ago and although it is a very healthy looking bush now, that has flowered for the last 3 years, it has produced ZIP/-0-. The original tag stated that it did not need another guava to produce fruit but I'm doubting that now. Last year I did have one of the master grafters at the exchange graft one of your Albert's Pride scions onto an ornamental feijoa plant that I had just purchased at a nearby Sebastopol nursery. Unfortunately, that grafting did not "take". I went ahead and planted that small, root stock plant in the vicinity of my established guava bush in the hopes that somehow a successful cross pollination might take place. The new, young plant is still too small to have produced any flowers and not a pineapple guava but I figured...Who knows? It could't hurt and it might help. Can you lend me any assistance with my search? Any tips on how to obtain one of your Albert's Pride seedlings at this coming Saturday's scion exchange in Sebastopol???

Nice layout! I end up sketching down varieties on pieces of paper and then losing them....that is why I recently started a blog as well. If nothing else it will be good for ME. Next time you are in the nursery (Mid City), ask for Tina and say Hi. I can keep an eye out for special coleus for you :p !!

Hi Joey, Glad you were successful in raising those tiny sprouts up to fruiting plants. Let me know if you get fruit and how you like them. I had forgotten how small they were, as that batch was only a few months old, started on bottom heat to get them up quick. The pots of seedlings I bring annually to the Rare Fruit Growers gatherings now are a full one year old, but grown very crowded and without much fertilizer so that they can be pricked out just like that first 2007 batch, but the plants are tougher with better root systems. I fruited some of those 2007 seedlings myself and they came true in 2010 and were high quality fruit, so I think you will get excellent tasting fruit. Let them fall off the tree so they are really ripe, then bring inside for a day or two. There is a magic couple of days, usually 2-4 days inside, where they are perfectly balanced between tart and sweet, and then they start to go down in both flavors as they get soft. You can scoop out the pulp with a spoon and freeze in a regular ziplock bag; they are great half thawed, or blended into smoothies. Thanks for the great photos. You are correct on the labeling. Albert's Pride #1 was a particularly good plant in a long row of similar seedlings that I was going to call AP with successive numbers, since #1 is at the beginning of that seedling row. My friend, Pat Schafer, advised me in 2007 to not use numbers after the same name, as eventually they will get confused. I took his advice, and AP now means just that #1 plant. At this point the #1 doesn't mean what I had intended, but the way you're using it makes sense, and tells me that your plants were from that original 2007 seed batch, so I think it is OK to continue to use the #1, but it's even more important to call it Albert's Pride Seedling, so everyone knows that AP is now a seedling race, which is what I intended. I don't know if my bold claim of "true to seed and better than any cultivar" will hold up in the end, but so far the reviews have been very positive. Tell me what part of the Bay area you are growing them in, and let me know how you rate the fruit. Best of luck, Mark Albert.
